The Belfry of Fougères

Please use headphones or keep the volume low for everyone’s comfort.

On your right stands the belfry, a symbol of the prosperity of Fougères’ merchant bourgeoisie at the end of the Middle Ages.

It reflects the city’s important trade connections with Flemish merchants.

Built in 1397, it is probably the oldest belfry in Brittany.

For more than 600 years, its original bell has marked the rhythm of daily life for the people of Fougères.
