The Mélusine Tower

Please use headphones or keep the volume low for everyone’s comfort.

On your right rises the Mélusine Tower, the highest point of the castle at 32 meters tall.

Built in the 15th century, it is the main tower of the fortress, also known as the keep.

This tower inspired Victor Hugo for a location in his novel Ninety-Three: La Tourgue.

The name is actually a contraction of “Tour Gauvain”, referring to the maiden name of Hugo’s companion and famous letter writer, Juliette Drouet, who was born in Fougères.
